How does a mitigation system work?

Some radon reduction systems can reduce radon levels in your home by up to 99%. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in the soil.  Because the air pressure inside your home is usually lower than the pressure in the soil around you home’s foundation, your house acts like a vacuum drawing radon in through foundation cracks and other openings.

There are several proven methods to reduce radon in your home, but the one primarily used is a vent pipe system and fan.  This system pulls radon from beneath the house and vents it to the outside and is know as a soil suction radon reduction system.  This type of system does not require major changes to your home and in some cases can be ‘hidden’ with the pipe venting out though the home’s attic/roof.  Sealing foundation cracks and other openings, like a crawl space, makes this kind of system more effective and cost-efficient.  There are other methods that may also work in your home.  The right system depends on the design of your home and other factors.
